Drivers and bus conductors going about their daily activities |
Let us assume the world was without a tailor, a carpenter, a mason, a cobbler, a dishwasher, or a housekeeper, how would our world be defined? Let us put it in this format also, that our world was without a doctor, a nurse, a teacher, a pilot, a driver, a chef, and many others, how would you describe our planet? I want you to know one thing for sure, everyone on the planet is very important because they play a very important role in every individual space, place, or area where they find themselves. How would the doctor be able to drive to his workplace if the civil engineer doesn't make him the best roads? How would the lawyer become a lawyer if he or she doesn't sit in the classroom to be taught by a teacher? Also, where would the student sit to be taught if the Maison doesn't raise those blocks to form a classroom? This is why everyone's occupation is important; one way or the other, we all depend on one another to survive. Just think about it: How important the farmer is to you. But let us first try to understand and deduce what occupation stands for.
What is Occupation?
Occupation, simply put, can be a person's means of living. To understand it properly, it's a person's basic or primary activity, or profession that provides them with some financial support. To appreciate this more, a person may not have a specific occupation but must undertake a series of tasks within a day to have some financial support. Let us say that, Mr. Kwabena within a day has to sell from six in the morning to noon, and from there goes to the washing bay to help in the washing of cars, then we can say at that particular hour Mr. Kwabena is working, then, that is his occupation in that specific hour or moment.
What we mostly get wrong
Our thoughts and understandings tend to be that one
profession or occupation is better and more important than the other. In
Africa, Ghana, for example, every parent wants his or her child to become a
Doctor, Military personnel, a journalist, a Lawyer, work in the bank, or be in
a higher position. Yes, those thoughts, ideas, and perspectives on life are
good, but they are not always true.
We all need the help of one another to survive, cope, get to where we want to, and become what we want to become in life. This is what our world needs. A united world, with united minds and hearts. A world where everyone is equally seen as important, where everyone has value in the eyes of another. Not to be a judge of character, what someone looks like, what they do, or how they walk. Not to look down on the poor and favor the rich.
A true life story.
My name is Jessica Clottey. I remember my years in the university when times were hard for me. You know, I am not from a financially stable home, and so sometimes, I have to fight to survive on my own. My whole life itself has been sad since I was born an orphan. My dad passed on a week before my birth and my mum also kicked the bucket the day of my birth. Growing up has been hard but by God’s grace, we found ourselves down the lane to greatness in life. I currently work as a businesswoman, having my brand. I recollect the days of my time in the university, where because you wore one dress or didn’t have the money to buy an expensive wig, you were not the favorite of a person to be associated with. What hurt me most has always been a memory was an encounter I had during my first semester when I got to the third year in the university.
The previous long vacation was a stressful one, and the job wasn’t available
that much. I had no work to do to fetch much income but to only sell on the
streets to raise some income to settle my bills for the next academic year. The
income I fetched wasn’t much, so it was very challenging to raise the money to
settle both my exorbitant hostel fees and school fees. The third year came, and
I vividly remember the little amount of money I had which in my mind, I had decided
to use as payment for my school fees. But in my sad experience, despite the letters
I wrote, interviews I went to, and the sad stories I mentioned to the Directorate
of Student Affairs, I was still refused the support to help settle my bills and
have accommodation. I have gone through discrimination from friends, relatives,
and even loved ones because of who I was.
My mates would usually boast of the big companies their
fathers or mothers were in charge of, or the big positions their parents had in
big institutions. In our world, it is such that, the rich want to favor the rich.
In Ghana, to get yourself instant help, you must have a connection, or someone you
know. It is not only in our communities but even in governmental institutions.
There was a roommate I had whose father was known to be very wealthy yet she
was on scholarship. No room for the poor you see. Today, I find myself here,
and yet all those who overlooked us have not yet been able to put themselves in
any better position.
Why must you not criticize the occupation of others?
As noted earlier, every job in the world is important and
forms a greater part of our ecosystem. We depend on one another to survive.
From the buzzing cities of big nations to the dark and thin corners of many
streets, every job someone does plays an important role. Well, also, you may
not know what the future holds for the person you are criticizing. Life is
mysterious, and the law of karma plays its role too. We all need the help and
work of each other to survive. Thus, this is a major reason why we do not have the right to look down on any one's occupation. Let us help each other, and appreciate one another.
